100v Line Speakers Explained: Set Up and Benefits

When tasked with specifying a large-scale audio system, numerous speakers can be required to ensure even coverage over multiple areas. This can present a challenge, as using traditional low impedance speakers will involve either a bulky and messy cable situation as well as high losses in the cables.

A 100v line speaker system works best in this situation and offers a much simpler solution. Let’s delve deeper into how this system works, it’s advantages and how to set one up.

What is a 100v line speaker?

Sometimes referred to as a “constant-voltage system”, 100v line speaker systems are the most economical and simple multi-speaker sound systems to install. 100v line speakers are commonly used in large areas where multiple speakers are used across large distances, such as shopping centres, outdoor events, schools and bars & restaurants.

As the name suggests, the system runs on 100 volts, allowing it to operate over long distances. Typically, each individual speaker is fitted with a transformer with a high impedance primary (the 100v line side) and low impedance secondary (connected to the speaker driver). By using this system, the line voltage is increased in order to decrease the current, supplying a greater load and increasing the power across long distance cables.

How to connect 100v line speakers

As part of your system, you’ll have a 100v line amplifier. Its  output power will determine how loud the system will be and how many speakers you will be able to connect. The golden rule is that the total wattage of all of your speakers should not exceed the output wattage of the amplifier.

Speakers should be wired parallel, either ‘daisy chained’ from speaker to speaker or break out from a central point in a star wire. Either option won’t affect the impedance of the system as long as everything remains in parallel.

When connecting your 100v line system, it’s important to ensure that the correct size of cable is used and that it is double insulated due to the level of the voltage. The diameter of your cable should be determined by the cable distance and the power of your amplifier.

The advantages of 100v line speakers

There are many advantages to using a 100v line PA system that we’ve already touched on, such as running numerous speakers from a single amplifier over large distances without losing audio quality.

Another advantage to this speaker system is the easy installation process, as the speakers only need wiring into one terminal, the amplifier. As the speakers are wired in parallel or daisy-chained, this will also reduce the cables required and therefore save on costs. Adding/subtracting additional speakers when needed is also a simple process.

Using a 100v line speaker system is a great choice for spaces and events that are looking to broadcast audio and background music across large areas thanks to functionality and flexibility it offers.

When installing your 100v line system, it is important to ensure that it is configured based on your equipment and event requirements. If you’re unsure on any aspect of your system, then please get in touch with a member of our expert team. Contact us on 01274 777 200 or sales@pasystems.co.uk.
